Rio Ave

Founded in 1939 in Vila do Conde and named after the river Ave, which meets the Atlantic beside the town; it plays in green and white stripes at the Estadio dos Arcos. Rio Ave has won three second-division titles but no major trophy, losing the Taca de Portugal finals of 1984 and 2014 and the 2014 League Cup final. The 2014 cup run brought its first European campaign, and its coastal derbies with Varzim and Leixoes are known as the Derbis do Mar.
