FC Barcelona

Barcelona were founded on 29 November 1899 by the Swiss businessman Joan Gamper, who advertised in a Barcelona sports paper for players. Owned by its members, who elect the president, the club has served as a symbol of Catalan identity, particularly under the Franco dictatorship, and takes the motto 'mes que un club'. Barcelona have won the European Cup or Champions League five times, first in 1992 and most emphatically with the treble sides of 2009 and 2015; they have played at the Camp Nou since 1957.
