AFC Wimbledon was founded in 2002 by supporters of Wimbledon FC after the Football Association allowed that club to move to Milton Keynes, a decision they regarded as the end of the original club. Starting in the ninth tier, it was promoted six times in fourteen seasons to reach League One in 2016, the first club formed in the twenty-first century to enter the Football League. It holds the English record of 78 league matches unbeaten between 2003 and 2004 and returned to Plough Lane in 2020.
