F.C. Hansa Rostock was created on 28 December 1965 when the football section was split out of SC Empor Rostock, a club formed in 1954. Hansa won the last East German league title and the last East German cup in 1991, immediately before reunification, and then became the most successful eastern club in the Bundesliga, spending ten straight seasons in the top flight from 1995 to 2005. Its crest shows a Hanseatic cog, giving the club its nickname Die Kogge, and with over 31,000 members it is the largest sports club in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
