Gillingham was founded in 1893 as New Brompton Football Club and took the name of the Kent town in 1912. Elected to the Football League in 1920, the club was voted out in 1938 in favour of Ipswich Town and only regained its place in 1950 when the League expanded to 92 clubs. Gillingham has won the fourth-tier title twice, in 1963-64 and 2012-13, and its only spell in the second tier ran from 2000 to 2005; it has played at Priestfield Stadium since its foundation.
