La Berrichonne takes its name from an all-round sports society founded in Chateauroux in 1883, which opened a football section in 1916 and merged in 1920 into the Berrichonne Avenir Club; the present club is the result of a further merger in 1935 with AS Chateauroux, so both 1883 and 1935 are defensible founding dates. Named after the historic province of Berry, it has played 41 seasons in the second division and reached the top flight only once, in 1997-98. Chateauroux lost the 2004 Coupe de France final to Paris Saint-Germain but still entered the UEFA Cup, and plays at the Stade Gaston Petit.
