ASM Oran was founded in 1933 in the Mdina Jdida quarter of Oran as Association Sportive Musulmane Eckmuhlienne, one of the Muslim clubs set up in colonial Algeria in opposition to the European-run sides; some French sources instead give 1935. It became ASM Oran in 1962, spent 1977 to 1989 as the state-sponsored ASC Oran, and took its present name in 1989. Never a national champion, it was league runner-up in 1991 and Algerian Cup runner-up in 1981 and 1983, and is nicknamed El-Madrassa, The School, for the players its academy has produced.
