The club was founded in 1947 in Osaka as the Sumitomo Metal Industries works team and moved to Kashima in Ibaraki in 1975, taking the name Kashima Antlers when Japanese football turned professional in 1991 and 1992. It counts the honours of both eras as its own. Kashima is the most decorated club in Japanese football, with a record nine J1 League titles and twenty major domestic trophies, and won the AFC Champions League in 2018 before losing the Club World Cup final to Real Madrid in 2016.
