Saint-Etienne was founded in 1919 as Association Sportive Casino by the staff association of the Casino grocery chain, was renamed several times, and took its present name in 1933 when it turned professional. Les Verts won eight championships between 1964 and 1976 and ten in all, a French record, together with six Coupes de France. The club lost the 1976 European Cup final to Bayern Munich in a match remembered in France for two shots against the square goalposts, and plays at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard.
