Founded in Ferrara in 1907 as the Ars et Labor cultural circle, which set up a football section in May 1910 under the name Ferrara Foot-Ball Club; the sporting branch broke away on 15 March 1913 as the Societa Polisportiva Ars et Labor, the SPAL of the initials. It has played 24 seasons in the Italian top flight, best fifth in 1959-60, and won Serie B in 1950-51 and 2016-17. Successive financial collapses in 2005 and 2012-13, the second ending in erasure from the federation register and bankruptcy, mean the present company continues the historic club de facto rather than in law.
