Founded in 1899 in the Devon resort, the club worked through the East Devon, Torquay & District and Plymouth & West Devon leagues before winning the Southern League and being admitted to the Football League in 1927. Nicknamed the Gulls and playing at Plainmoor since 1921, it spent 31 seasons in the Third Division South and survived re-election votes after finishing bottom in 1985 and 1986. It lost its Football League place in 2007 and, apart from a five-year return, has played non-League football since.
