The club was founded on 15 June 1990 by the mayor of Istanbul as Istanbul Buyuksehir Belediyespor, the municipality's own team, and separated from the city administration on 4 June 2014 to become Istanbul Basaksehir FK. It won the Super Lig for the first time in 2019-20. It plays at the Basaksehir Fatih Terim Stadium in a new district on the European edge of the city.
