Founded on 13 December 1955 in the Rimac district of Lima by Ricardo Bentin Mujica and his wife Esther Grande de Bentin, owners of the Backus y Johnston brewery, which is why the club is known as the Cerveceros, the brewers. It won the Peruvian championship at its first attempt in 1956 and has since taken twenty league titles, more than any other club of the professional era. Long a tenant of the Estadio Nacional, it has played at the Estadio Alberto Gallardo since 1995.
