Villarreal CF was founded in 1923 in a town of some 50,000 people in the province of Castellon and spent most of its history in the lower divisions before first reaching La Liga in 1998. Nicknamed the Yellow Submarine, it reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2006 and 2022 and won the Europa League in 2021, beating Manchester United on penalties for its first major trophy. It plays at the Estadio de la Ceramica.
