Borussia Dortmund

Dortmund were founded on 19 December 1909 by young men from the Borussia brewery district who broke away from a church-run club, meeting at the Zum Wildschutz inn. In 1966 they became the first German club to win a European trophy, the Cup Winners' Cup, and they took the Champions League in 1997. Near-bankruptcy in 2005 forced a sale of the Westfalenstadion, whose south terrace, the Yellow Wall, is the largest standing area in European football.
