Founded in 1922 and elected to the Football League in 1929, York are nicknamed the Minstermen after York Minster. As a third-tier side they reached the FA Cup semi-final in 1954-55, one of the great runs by a lower-division club. York lost League status in 2004, returned in 2012 after winning the FA Trophy, were relegated again in 2016 and regained their place a decade later. They played at Bootham Crescent from 1932 until moving to the LNER Community Stadium in 2021.
