Napoli were constituted on 1 August 1926 as Associazione Calcio Napoli, successor to the Naples Foot-Ball and Cricket Club founded by English sailors and merchants in 1905. Diego Maradona brought the club its first two Italian championships, in 1987 and 1990, along with the UEFA Cup in 1989. Napoli went bankrupt in 2004 and was refounded in the third tier by the film producer Aurelio De Laurentiis, recovering the historic name in 2006 and winning Serie A again in 2023.
