Association de la Jeunesse Auxerroise was founded in 1905 in a town of fewer than 40,000 people and was shaped for four decades by Guy Roux, its manager from 1961. Auxerre first reached the French first division in 1980 and won the league and cup double in 1996, adding three further Coupes de France. Its academy produced Eric Cantona, Laurent Blanc, Basile Boli and Djibril Cisse, and the club plays at the Stade de l'Abbe-Deschamps.
