The founding members had played together as a loose team from 1 May 1909, and the club was formally constituted as the Grazer Fussballclub "Sturm" on 31 March 1912 in the Hotel Goldene Birn, adding athletics and handball sections from 1920. It plays in black and white and comes from the Jakomini district of Graz, where the old Gruabn and the Augarten were its historic grounds. Since 1997 it has played at the Liebenau stadium, now the Merkur Arena, and the Puntigam brewery has been its main sponsor since 1996.
