Founded on 14 March 1898 in Bern by four schoolboys - the brothers Max and Oskar Schwab, Hermann Bauer and Franz Kehrli - who had been impressed by a visit of Basel's Old Boys and borrowed both the name and the yellow-and-black colours. Seventeen Swiss championships and eight Swiss Cups make it one of the country's leading clubs, and it reached the European Cup semi-final in 1959. It has played at the Wankdorf since 1925 and, with around 20,000 members, is the largest sports club in Switzerland.
