Karlsruher SC traces its origins to Karlsruher FC Phoenix, founded in 1894, and took its modern shape through mergers completed in 1952 that joined Phoenix with VfB Muehlburg. Its predecessor was German champion in 1909, and KSC itself won the DFB-Pokal in 1955 and 1956 and the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 1996. A member of the inaugural Bundesliga in 1963, it has since spent most of its history moving between the top two divisions and keeps a fierce rivalry with VfB Stuttgart.
