Founded in 1919, Piacenza played eight Serie A seasons between 1993 and 2003 and was notable for fielding only Italian players until 2001. A financial crisis ended in judicial bankruptcy and expulsion by the Italian federation on 21 June 2012. The local amateur club LibertasSpes then leased the Piacenza brand, played 2012-13 in Eccellenza as Lupa Piacenza and adopted the name Piacenza Calcio 1919 in 2013, so the present club is a legal refoundation of the original.
