Formed in 1883 as Heaton Norris Rovers and renamed Stockport County in 1890 after the county borough, the club is nicknamed the Hatters for the town's former hat-making trade. It has played at Edgeley Park since 1902 and spent 106 unbroken years in the Football League until relegation in 2011, winning divisional titles in 1922, 1937 and 1967 and reaching the League Cup semi-finals in 1996-97. Financial trouble in the 2000s took County into non-league football before a recovery returned it to the EFL in 2022.
