England's women's team played its first international in November 1972 against Scotland, half a century after the Football Association banned women from its grounds; the FA took over its administration from the Women's Football Association only in 1993. Known as the Lionesses, it won the European Championship in 2022, England's first major title since 1966, and was World Cup runner-up in 2023. It has reached six World Cups, finishing third in 2015 and fourth in 2019.
