Wednesday were founded in 1867 as the football section of the Wednesday Cricket Club, whose members were tradesmen given Wednesday afternoons off. Four league titles and three FA Cups were all won before 1936, and the club has played at Hillsborough since 1899. 'The Owls' take their nickname from the Owlerton district around the ground.
