Rotherham United was formed in 1925 by the merger of Rotherham County and Rotherham Town, and traces its lineage further back to Thornhill United of 1870. The Millers lost the inaugural League Cup final to Aston Villa in 1961 and won the Football League Trophy in 1996. They left Millmoor, their home for over a century, in 2008 and have played at the New York Stadium since 2012.
