Bolton Wanderers were founded in 1874 as Christ Church FC by the vicar and schoolmaster of that church, and took the Wanderers name in 1877 after leaving the church hall and moving repeatedly between grounds. A founder member of the Football League in 1888, the club won the FA Cup four times, including the first Wembley final in 1923. Thirty-three supporters were crushed to death at Burnden Park in 1946; the club left that ground for a new stadium at Horwich in 1997.
