Wigan Athletic was founded in 1932, months after the town's previous League club, Wigan Borough, resigned from the Football League and folded. Wigan spent 46 years in non-League football before election to the Football League in 1978, then rose to the Premier League in 2005 and stayed eight seasons, winning the FA Cup in 2013 days before being relegated. The club left Springfield Park for the 25,000-seat stadium at Robin Park in 1999 and has twice entered administration since 2020.
