The Saints were founded in 1885 by members of the St Mary's Church Young Men's Association and played as St Mary's before becoming Southampton St Mary's in 1894 and Southampton FC three years later. The club reached the FA Cup final twice before the First World War and won the trophy in 1976 as a Second Division side, beating Manchester United. Southampton left The Dell, their home for 103 years, for St Mary's Stadium in 2001.
