Cagliari were founded in 1920 and are the only club from Sardinia to have made a lasting mark on Italian football. In 1970 they won Serie A with a side built around Gigi Riva, still Italy's record international scorer, who refused repeated transfers to the northern giants. The club moved from the Stadio Sant'Elia to a new ground in the 2010s.
