Shakhtar Donetsk

Shakhtar was founded in 1936 as Stakhanovets, the team of the Donbas coal miners, and took the name Shakhtar, meaning miner, in 1946. It won the Soviet Cup in 1961 and 1962 and after Ukrainian independence became the country's dominant club, taking the UEFA Cup in 2009 to become one of only two Ukrainian clubs to win a major European trophy. The war in Donbas drove the club out of the Donbass Arena in 2014, and it has since staged home matches in Lviv, Kharkiv and Kyiv while keeping its offices in the capital.
